How? What? This sounds terrible. But more details would be appreciated. I know a lot of people who take animals back and forth to/from Hamm, somtimes A LOT of animals and never heard of something like this. The occasional animal, yes, but not so many. Unless you got them all from one dodgy person it sounds like there was a transport problem. Not enough ventilation? Problem with heatpacks (they use up oxygen)?
Sorry for your loss. |

Thanks to RonW, SteveL, Penfold, Lynne and everyone for the concern.
Now that my good buddie Ian and I have had a chance to take stock (literaly) here is the full story which I believe will run for some time.
Firstly Ian and I have 50+ years herp keeping between us so the herps were packed in suitable containers and stored in standard ventilated poly-boxes (two of them).
These were given to the trip organiser and placed on the coach by them at 5.00 saturday after the show.
They were taken of the coach at Leeds at about 6am this morning and driven home by Ian and I.
They were unpacked by Ian who discovered the dead at about 8am or so.
All the snakes and a leo packed in my box were dead and on opening the polybox the smell was well ..very strong, they had been dead for some time.
Some had open (typical) mouths full of substrate and others looked as though they had fitted as they had severe kinks in the body.
One might be dismayed at one or two deaths in transit but this is something else.
If they had gotten too col d most would have been ok as there was a lot of hardy north american stock.
We have decided to send at least two of the larger dead to have a full PM to find out why.
I'm interested if anyone on Coach two has had any similar deaths..or were we just the unfortunate B**tards who lost 25 snakes and a leo!!!!
Interestingly the stock in box two was all ok!!!
Again thanks for your concern..its appreciated!!! _________________ Live for today as your dead for a long long time

Fumes or heat would seem high on the list of suspects.
The fact that they smell so bad is in my opinion an indicator of rapid decay!! _________________ Live for today as your dead for a long long time

i would imagine if it were heat or fumes ,that more will be affected. we will just have to wait and see if others on that bus were affected too.
the pm's should throw up some reason for this too. once again am so sorry slippery, you must be devastated. _________________

Well I'm another person that has lost out, coach 2 once again.
All Dead:
1.1 U.phantasticus
1.1 U.cf.phantasticus
0.0.2 A.felinus
1.1 T.chalzalie were OK as was 1.0 BCI.
the animals that have died are all susceptible to over heating as they all come from cooler climates, those that survived can tolerate higher temperatures. Ive booked to have PM's done by a reptile vet in the morning but for now i have just photographed them in situe and put them in the fridge to preserve the tissue structure. I bought the same species back by car in December with no problems and it was hatchlings in December and the cf.phantasticus were F1 captive bred adults so theoretically much hardier and were from the same breeder as the hatchlings i bought back in December.
Cheers, will _________________ 61 and counting |
