I have made a few changes today to the Viv i.e

1. plant to provide cover
2. Irrigation system to make it easier to water the plants.
3. 600mm 20 watt natural tube light
4. Moved the heat mat out of the lower cave to give a larger cool hide!

Lets see what she thinks of it !

She has already been out tonight and spent most of the time at the top of the viv !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And as for the light being to bright, I thought the purpose of a vivarium was to simulate the real life habitat of the animal it houses.
And there is a large cave for her to hide in the shade!

I am happy to give you any info you need to get you building your own version of this viv.

If you cant or don't feel you could build the main viv yourself, you can all ways have one made to measure. Or if on a tight budget keep your eyes open for shops that are closing down, you may be able to buy an old display case to modify.

I am away tonight and will give you more info tomorrow when i get back, just leave me a list of questions !

I'd really like to know what you made the backing of the walls with, polystyrene?
And what you covered it with to get that great stone effect?
Also some suggestions on where to pick up the materials?

Any other info you think is relevant would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

When building the fake i Had access to lots off expanding foam, so I pot the empty viv on its bake and sprayed it all over the walls.

The shelves were made from triangular bird feeding bowls screwed to the sides.

I built the walls up to between 1 and 2 inches and left it alone for 24 hours.
Then using a pad saw ( This is for cutting plaster board ) I cut the shapes in to the rocks. When your happy with the shapes, you need to hover the viv top to bottom.

Then I covered the foam with a very wet plaster mix then dried it out as fast as possible in a jot room. This will give off lot of condensation. And drying it fast will make the plaster crack.

Then I painted it with masonary paint with 3 coats.

Thankyou very much Scott!

You've made it sound really easy, so once i've got my living room decorated I just might give it a go on one of my vivs, and let you know how it turns out.

Thanks again,

Here's some fake background/rocks I've made for a friends Leopard Geckos..

Click Here to see how I made the fake rock/cave.

I made a few fake rocks using polystyrene covered in tile grout then coated them in PVA glue and sand. I didn't like using grout as it's messy to use and I had trouble spreading it on hard to reach places. I experimented with polystyrene covered in PVA glue and sand only and found it as strong and looks the same as using grout.

When making this background I used wooden skewers to make the ledges stronger and covered the back and bottom in Bounty kitchen roll and PVA/water mix to make the background stronger so that it can be lifted out without breaking it. I've added darker sand and reindeer moss in places. I've glued on some air plants and attached two plastic plants (I will add some more air and plastic plants later).

Thankyou reeve105a!

Another thing I think I'm going to have a go at making.

My Leopard geckos are gonna think they are living in Buckingham Palace!!!

Many thanks,
