No one has said they need them in the sense that they are a vital part of the their diet. CGD will indeed provide all the neccessary nutrition.
It's just a question of whether or not in most cases, its fair to deny them the chance to naturally hunt for their food. And also that its a big and for most people enjoyable part of keeping a gecko.
When keeping large numbers of them for breeding I'd say fair enough, but personally if you only have a few, offering natural hunting is better.
Most people wouldn't keep a dog and try to avoid offering it meat based food...
It's a personal thing I guess but if your crestie doesn't eat cricks well fair enough! It would if you didnt offer food for say 2 weeks then stuck a crick in though _________________ Kind Regards,

Chris, out of interest I find it far far easier to feed all my cresteds just crickets but actually found far better results when I switched to CGD. That's why I continue to use it.
The crested gecko diet is also a more expensive way to feed my geckos, crickets cost me nothing _________________

Oh yeh Scott I can well believe its better in that sense, its formulated specifically for that, while crickets obviously are not!
It's just a personal preference, one of the things that I enjoy most about geckos is their feeding habits. _________________ Kind Regards,

I guess it's just personal choice and I don't think they mind what they eat so long as they eat.
My male loves CGD/banana paste as he's had it from a month old and he gets insects a few times a week. I like to see the feeding response with livefood and it gives him something extra to do.
The female I got from you Chris has been fed lobster roaches all her life right? She still gets them here but always has a dish of the CGD/banana paste in with her just incase she decides to eat it. But she doesn't I will hopefully try and get her onto it but I will never starve a pet just to get it to eat what I want it to. |

She has always eaten insects at least twice a week and pure fruit mix once a week, as an adult she was offered and fruit once a week respectively. _________________ Kind Regards,

She must just not like the paste I made lol. We've got enough lobster roaches here anyway so it doesn't really matter |

All of my Cresties and Aurics only have neat cgd, even my newborn hatchlings only get neat cgd and their all thriving.Even Cresties that don't like will grow to like it it just takes time,it might not be 100% natural but neither is feeding brown crickets or locust as these are hardly the insect prey they would be eating in the forest where they originate from. |

Don't get me wrong I will be feeding any babies I hatch on CGD with insects maybe once a week. I just don't like trying to force a crestie that has eaten mostly insects all of it's life to stop. |

I'm not going to the end of sanity on this with trying to find the exact insects they would eat in the wild, nor am I bad mouthing cgd or those that use it.
I'm just saying that its obviously more natural for them to have insects in their diet as this is what they naturally eat, along with fruit and its fun to watch them hunt. We replicate these conditions as best we can. _________________ Kind Regards,
