put the box in two days ago, I'm using a none treated hedge peat!!! only thing my local pet/garden shop had, (all out of vermiculite at the mo')
if she gives me a chance, I'll switch to a vermiculite mix tomorrow as I'll have a chance to pick some up.
a shame the eggs are infertile, hopefully next year this will be different?!
she went in for the first time a couple of hours ago and does seem to be enjoying herself, digging around a bit although she has since settled.
does the water bowl removal make a big difference
want to make sure i can do what i can to insure she passes all the slugs.
one last thing, is it relatively easy/obvious to check for the presence of any retained eggs
much appreciated

I think the peat will suffice to be honest,i was just stating the way i do it.
This time the water bowl isnt so relevant if the eggs are infertile although i would still remove any water.
The only reason i say this is because if she did lay in the water bowl as opposed to the egg box then the same behaviour maybe exhibited in future seasons. If you follow my drift.
Im not too big of a man to admit i lost half a clutch of eggs overnight(drowned)due to this very thing many years ago, luckily the eggs laid formed a pyramid shape IN the water bowl. The top two 'tiers' were okay thankfully, but the bottom four eggs were history!.
You should be able to tell visually if she has eggs left, after laying she will probably look like a deflated innertube and any lumps and bumbs should be obvious. But hey dont think about that cos its not likely to happen.
Pituophis are cool snakes

update on this situation. . . .
she still has not laid anything and she had her last shed on the 18th may!!!!
I'm now thinking it's time for the vets but just checked on her again and she seems to be smaller
is there any chance she would re-absorb any or all the slugs?
she has passed waste on two occasions in the last month, these being predominately white-ish!
any thoughts would be appreciated
thanks

Hi Andy,
First up try not to worry yourself too much.
You'll prob need to give her a good examination to be sure she isn't egg bound.
Get her out the viv and let her run through your hand whilst gently using a couple of fingers to feel her belly for any lumps n bumps.
Pay most attention to the lower third and gently push up into the belly, another method is to lay your hand flat on a smooth surface (table/worktop) and let the snake crawl over your hand and feel for any egg like lumps.
let me know your findings.
Hope this Helps................AL _________________ if you like something buy it,if you don't then don't |

thanks for the response Al
just had her out i can't actually feel any egg like bumps, it seems to be more like one big soft mass!?
not able to tell via feeling along her belly or letting her run over my hands.
should it be quite obvious if there are eggs/slugs?
cheers

No probs Andy,
Glad to help.
Usually you can feel obivous gaps in the mass if you get me,leading to one to think its defo eggs/slugs.
Has she fed recently or is she refusing food?

I haven't offered her any food this past month to be honest.
she last ate 19 April, then refused on the 5 & 11 may. shed on the 18 may
then refused a small meal on the 20 may
cheers

Hi all , bit of a newby yet on here, but interested in the Bullsnake with the "egg problem". looking at the pics and the size and location of the swelling I would be thinking -maybe some other problem and not eggs (hope I'm wrong) I have seen snakes with liver growths that could look externally like this one. I would suggest a quick trip to the vets if the problem has not yet resolved. Hope it goes well. Cheers. _________________ jimbo |

i'm starting to think the same
will be phoning the vets shortly but part of me still wants to delay it because if it's something more serious then . . . . .
. . . . . . "Major Heartache" will be paying a visit
must stay positive *big big smile* _________________ best of luck in the new season |

Hi Baldeagle,
Welcome to the forum.
I think your right about a visit to the vets at the very least just to give Andy some peace of mind.
thanks for the input. RGDS........AL _________________ if you like something buy it,if you don't then don't |
