Partly because it's easier to clean, partly to prevent substrate ingestion (they can be pretty ferocious when grabbing insects) and partly so that I can spot rogue escapee insects before they get ensconced under the substrate!

They are fairly 'low maintenance' if set up properly, and as they are nocturnal, you don't need UV. As long as you provide cover for them during the day and a basking spot of about 90 degrees (we use a ceramic on top of the viv) they're happy. It's fascinating watching them hunt insects, especially at night.

I have only ever found him to get aggressive when you try to handle him or put your hand too close to him, when he opens his mouth wide and barks (sounds like a loud croak!). He will bite if you try to pick him up: We don't handle him unless he needs to be moved for a clean out.

He gets misted every few days and seems to enjoy that, but he will quite happily drink from his water bowl too.

Thanks for the info Louise. I have mine set up similar to as you described. No UV but a basking area, cork bark tubes for cover and some quite dense foliage. Apart from the substrate issue, I have been using large repti bark but was worried about possible ingestion, hence asking. Thanks .

Lovely tokays Rick. I would like to make Alistair's viv more naturalistic, but hadn't got round to bamboo/cork bark tubes just yet! I like the low maintenance aspect of the newspaper, and he seems happy enough! Laughing
