OK I have just been told that theres a very large cricket singing its head off in the garden. I know its not a wild type- I know its an escapee of mine. So, before it draws the neighbours attention to it- what can I do. I cant see it I can only hear it. What are the chances of it entering a neighbours house and getting me in deep trouble,it being a female whos about to lay 100000 eggs.dying of natural or un natural causes? If some of these questions seem a bit odd please bear in mind that I have a crix phobia, know nothing about their breeding habits and don't want to upset my neighbours.I know its an escapee because I stupidly put an old tank in the garden unlidded which obviously had a stray crix in it. Short of incinerating my neighbours lawn is there anything I can do?

I have crickets in the front, back and up the street Embarassed

Seriously it sounds like a tropical island on a warm night!

On the plus side I now have a massive population of toads living in the garden, can easily catch 3 or 4 each night (they sit at the entrance to my reptile building waiting for crickets to escape).

As for your problem, I wouldn't worry too much now, summer is nearly over so they won't survive over winter and the eggs are very unlikely to hatch.

Oh! Thanks for the reassurance Scott, I was getting quite manic about it- in fact I have just been outside now looking for it. The toad link is quite interesting as I have Natterjacks in my garden, this is why I haven't crept nextdoor with a sticky cricket trap-- guess their not hungry tonight or don't recognise it as food.On the plus side my Other half thinks that the neighbours wont even recognise the sound of a cricket and if they ask me I will act as mystified as they are !
I truly hate crickets Scott- I hate everything about them- every last damn thing. I am praying the Bean Weevils take off because if they do I will never have to have damn crix in the house EVER again. Thanks again for being reassuring.

Personally I would not worry about it, just plead insanity works for me!

I kinda enjoy the tropical lilt that my escapees enhance my residence with. i OFTEN GO EXPLORING IN THE WEE EARLY HOURS AND FIND ALL SORTS, CRIX, LOCUSTS, MEALWORM BEETLES, LOBSTER ROACHES IN THE WASHING MACHINE, IT'S REALLY QUITE AN AWESOME ADVENTURE. i HAVE SPOTTED QUITE A few locusts in the garden to.

Excuse the caps explosion there, but I am not going to retype that again.

This is getting really worrying for me now though, the house next door is for sale and with all the comings and goings I'm scared it will get in there. I have visions of the new owners calling in Rentokill and the beastie being identified as a cricket and traced back to me. I could have strangled my other half last night as I asked him if he'd found it- hes on crix watch while I'm out- and he said "no, but I did find this orrible big beetle with wings" when asked why he didnt stomp it to death as THAT was the crix he told me as he didnt know what it was he thought it might be some rare endangered species so he left it alone. I am not happy.Why hasn't anything eaten it yet?What the hell am I going to do? To make this worse the nights have turned warm again so the ruddy thing wont die for ages.

Jan, I live in a terrace and you can hear the crickets singing from out in the street. I wouldn`t worry too much about it. I know that crickets aren`t you`re favourite of all creatures. I used to stress about them keeping me awake , a LONG time ago. I have since adopted the can`t beat em join em attitude and actually find the noise soothing now. It`s like sleeping in Corfu every night. Laughing

In all seriousness, I think that I may actually have trouble sleeping now if the background cricket chorus was removed. It`s a mental attitude I adopted and life is a whole lot better for it trust me. Wink

I had a cricket escape into the flat upstairs... the guy who lives there thought it was his radiator making the noise and paid someone to come and take a look at it... some explaining was needed and many bottles of wine to get over that.
