hi all we was recently given an adult (1 year old) unwanted Yemen chameleon by some one we knew, who basically didn't want it anymore so he gave it to us because we keep lizards although not chameleons.
we have researched and set his viv up after a really good clean just want any help and advice you chameleon keepers could give us.
we think its a she as she does not have the foot spur are we right in thinking this
thanks _________________

Nice lot of plants in the viv. A male Yemen will have a heel spur on each reach rear foot. Females do not have these. Nice looking yemen, well done! _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

I am glad you think they are amazing creatures they are! I feed mine in two ways, at times I let crickets loose in their viv so that they have to hunt for them. At other times I place crickets in a deep tub either wedged in a branch or on the floor then it is easy to see them feed and monitor food taken. Does not have to be just crickets.
Locusts, crickets, the occasional wax worm, cockroaches are all enjoyed by the chameleons. I have also started to feed them houseflies and bluebottles which they enjoy. Good luck! _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

hi thanks, that's exactly what we did he ate wax worms a couple of meal worms and some kiwi fruit was not very interested in the crickets though. also sorry to be a pain the viv he came with does not have much ventilation how much is needed as we really cant afford a whole new viv at the mo so will alter his accordingly (we are thinking vents on top and sides will this be enough)
thanks again _________________

Kiwi nice one! Very good fruit are kiwis. I assume your viv is wood?
Yeah lots of ventilation required. What I did with mine was; cut out to large rectangular holes in top of viv, cut out one large rectangular hole each side of viv, about 75% cut out each side. About 75% cut out of top.
I covered the cut outs in fine gauge woven wire mesh (20 quid), small gauge to prevent insect escape. I placed pse baton all around the edges of mesh and screwed baton to viv, just to make it look a neat job. All attached on the external sides & top of viv.
Ideal on the top because that allowed me to mount the basking lamps on the outside of the viv to prevent burns. I also have a cheapo air purifier that blows out cool air from the top vents. My viv is mounted high up in an alcove and I placed the air purifier about two feet below the viv so the viv receives an indirect breeze of fresh air.
Also good for top vents for attaching a zoomed big or little dripper for water supply! The yems drink direct from the dripper tube which passes directly into the viv via hole in mesh. plus spray complete viv x2 per day with warm treated water.
Hope this helps a bit. _________________ www.rickslivefood.co.uk

Bud loves hoppers, will take them from your hand as soon as you put them in the flexi, also has the butterworms as a supper time treat - not so fattening as wax worms I think and high in calcium. Just to give you an idea Bud laid first clutch of eggs at about 17 months of age - so if its a female you'll get the signs in next couple of months or so I guess. |

Hi.
if your using sliding glass fronted viv, try making wooden frame door with fly screen. |
