Well, I've been playing with the new camera over the last few days (Cannon EOS Digital Rebel XT 350D with an 18-55mm lens kit) and I have finally captured a shot of my female V. Salvadorii showing off her Nictating Membrane during feeding time. Here are a couple shots of it. The first picture, you can see her teeth quite well. Enjoy.

And as I entered her enclosure, I found her hanging out like this. I thought it to be rather amusing.

And just a final picture of her and all her beauty.

Cheers,

Adrian

How smart do you think she is?

I have heard that certain tegus are very smart and could probably be clicker trained. I was wondering if you think the same could be done here?

She is a VERY intelligent animal. As far as being "clicker trianed," who knows. Now the question is, would I want her to be that way? Absolutely not. I'd rather be able to just observe her, and watch her natural behaviors then for it to act like a big puppy. Thats just not natural.

Thank you all for the compliments.

Cheers,

Adrian

They are cracking animals and looking very healthy as well,I think they have probably the best eyes out of all the the monitors.

Don't get me wrong i'm all for natural behaviour, but i am more for shedding as little blood as possible Wink

As my friends will know i have been toying with the idea of getting one or two of these for a while now, there are some practicalities i need to resolve before i can really take my interest to the next level - as a result i'm looking at ways to make this happen.

My way of thinking with the clicker "training" comes to the adult caging. With retics if you give them a large space they become highly territorial, which with large cages makes attacks from a multitude of attacks highly possible. With a snake it will generally attack from one position, but a monitor is a lot more agile which makes it even more dangerous for me to walk into a cage. So (bit longwinded the above, sorry) if i can train them to know the clicker means food they will know it's time to eat where as i may be able to use another sound (ie whistle or similar) to alert them to me in there cleaning etc etc so they don't come out looking to eat me.

May not be possible, just a thought.

Please don't take this in a rude way, but who's to say that they need a clicker to know when food is coming? If I'm in the cage at all, that means theres food, and she knows that. Once I enter the cage, she comes up to the ONE spot that she'll accept food.

She has also become accustomed to seeing the bucket and the tongs that I use for feeding.

They are very intelligent animals. If you want to try and use a clicker for feeding time, go on right ahead. But I say theres no need for, but thats my opinion.

Cheers,

Adrian
