|
|
Hey I made a post a while ago about my mum and dad not letting me get one, but today my Dads finally gave in and I'm allowed to get my first Royal
I'm looking for some advice on where to get my viv etc, I'm gona take a trip down the local reptile shop to see if they got any vivs, heat mats etc or take a jump into a few in Glasgow.
Does anyone have any advice on what my first royal should be? I've heard some morphs are stronger feeders than others. I have under £300 to spend on the snake so I'm looking to see what would be best, and I'll probably be getting a hatchling around October time hopefully whenever they're ready for sale.
Cheers for any advice,
Josh |

spiders or anything with spider in them are normally good feeders. but you are best looking at a lot and seeing which you like best. you cant beat a nice normal. try and buy captive bred rather than captive farmed or wild caught, as normally they are feeding well, but always check with the seller that they are. if possible see them feed before you buy. and also if possible, buy from the actual breeder rather than a pet store, as you will know the information about set ups etc is normally correct. although im not talking about rep shops, i mean the pet shops that sell reps as a side line.
great news that your dad eventually said yes. _________________

TBH I've been into snakes since I was young and I've seen quite a lot of the morphs, I dont really like the look of spiders I like Mojave's but they're pretty expensive, and seen a few nice other ones. Kinda like pastels aswell which I hear arent too much.
Theres no way Im buying a snake from a pet shop, it definetely will be from a breeder as I want my first snake to be good, not one of these ones that come out with mites etc, and I will be giving it the best of care. |

First set up the viv and make sure you have MORE than a heatmat heating it. A heat mat on its own will not do the job, you'll need a ceramic heater and a stat of some sort. The heater and stat is going to take £80 odd off your budget so take that into consideration. A reasonable viv will cost around the same money, plus of course substrate, a couple of hides, waterbowl, food, tongs for feeding, thermometer for checking temps the list go's on!!
As for what snake to buy, sort out the viv and then see what money you have left. If I was getting my first royal I would get a pretty normal female. To be honest if you've never kept a royal before, spending £300 on your first one is a bit much. If you do decide on a morph then a pastel is a good starter. |

The heating probably wont be as much of a problem in my house I got underfloor heating and the viv wont be far off the floor so Im thinking it will do the job. I'll set the viv up first and take temp readings etc so I can make sure its stable
And I duno why i dont like spider royals, jst different tastes lol |

you will find the heat wont go through the viv and heat the inside, you really will need heating for inside the viv too josh. royals are weird about the temps and they have to be spot on so you dont get any problems. _________________

What would you recommend then? A few people have said to keep the heat mat inside the viv taped down then covered and put the substrate on top, but another few have said put it under the viv? What else would be best to make up the temp? |
