|
|
It was literally cool with air temperatures at 5c and heavy cloud and occasional showers including hail.
Still this is spring and despite the fact that my study critters are nearly two weeks behind where they were in 2007 I decided to escape from the possibility of having to take her shopping and find some wiggly friends.
With the light being for the most part very poor I took the macro flash and set it on rear curtain shutter release.
I make no apologies for using a touch of flash to brighten things up as well
how the hell else can you do it.
In my experience its difficult to use reflectors as this only upsets the animals and i prefer to creep up on them slowly.
In these few shots I used my hat as a "bean bag" and had the camera set for a real high F-stop between F40 and higher so I get plenty depth of field.
Anyway most of my adders are still to slough though some of the males have done so none of the females have at this stage.
With the weather being poor only a few hardy males were out to play.
A couple were quite calm and happy to allow me to compose some shots.
for a change I decided to use my ultra-wide angle lends at 10mm which meant the lens hood was nearly touching his body.
This is how the mornings shoot turned out.
By the way this is better fun than winding up cat lovers!!!!
The first four images were taken on my trusty old Nikon 105mm macro lens whilst the last one was with a Sigma 10mm super-wide.
A decent end to a hectic week which included falling into a smelly pond during a survey, wrecking the car and completing some filming and rescuing newts along the way and surviving my DWA inspection!!
Now where can I buy some of those vipers on my wish list..............

Great pictures.
In all my days searching for wild Adders, i have never seen any. Do you have any hints or tips for spotting them in the wild? _________________ Fraser Gilchrist

Arrgh, my last trip off this stinking rock was to France, and only managed a one hour search for herps. No adders but the largest slow worm I've ever seen. 10C a very cold wind and only a few minutes of sun every hour and these two were out basking. I think slow worms have such amazing faces, almost an aged look.
Graeme, I have a love/hate relationship with your photos - I love to see them but hate not being able to drive a few minutes down the road and see them for myself. I think too many people forget that we have one of the most amazing species of snake on our doorstep, and it's not having them on my doorstep that has made me apprecite them more than ever before.
Thanks again for the photos.

Love the slow worm pictures, I've always wondered how to describe their faces. My friend says they look like little old dinosaurs. _________________
