Hi all,

Been thinking about getting a snake for few weeks now, never gave them any thought before so i don't know a thing! i don't know if there a "starter" snake but I've been drooling over pics of Jayapura tree pythons
or some form of royal/ball?
I like all the morphs I've seen of ball but don't know if I'm jumping in at the
expensive end? i want something fairly easy to keep and handle.
If anyone can suggest any ideas on what to get and even a good place to get it i would be more than grateful.

well i would recomend a royal they are simple to care for and good to handle

royals are fine if you are prepared for the eating habits. best starter snake for me would be a nice corn, they dont have any eating concerns.

I have been keeping lizards for years but decided i would like a snake to add to my reptile collection.I decided to buy one female normal royal in the beginning of december 07.To cut the story short i now have eight royals,many of them morphs,spent thousands of pounds and now nearly skint,lol.Royals are a good first snake if you do your research and buy a CB but be warned they are very addictive,lol.

Thanks everyone, i was thinking royal to start as there cheapish but i didn't know about there eating habits! i shall keep on with the reading for the time and see what happens.

what i usually do if im buying a royal, is ask if i can buy the tub its been living in. (if it has been living in a tub that is) along with the hides etc. that way its really the snakes home you are moving and everything is known to it, also ask if its cb. ask what it eats and how often, and ask to see eating records. dont handle it until its eaten 2 or 3 meals with you. some like to strike, so you need to ask if it strikes or likes the food left in with it. in fact ask to see it eating. that really is the only downside with them, and if you get one that eats no problem then it will make a great first snake.

i agree with lynne, if u get one that eats properly u've got a great snake. however be aware that no matter hoe good it feeds, there will be a food refusal period with every royal. some of them refuse 2 eat for 2 or 3 months easily. i also think that the corn snake is the perfect beginners snake, plus an added bonus is that they come in the most beautirul colours u can imagine Wink

Thanks mate i will remember that, about vivs i see so many ways people keep there snakes and don't quite know the best to follow, I've keep all my lizards in as natural set-ups as pos but i see alot of snakes in tubs or anything small and plastic? is this for life or just short term?
