I have a Lamp for my frogs. I mainly have it for the night time Heat Glo light. lately any time we unplug it it burns out. Do you think it's a problem with the bulbs or is it time to replace the lamp itself.? _________________ "We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." ~ Immanual Kant |

No it's just a 75 watt that sits on top of the tank. It's basically to take the chill off because our apartment can get cold.. especially on days like today when it's storming. and to provide some light Should it be on a thermostat? _________________ "We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." ~ Immanual Kant |

Really should be. You need to control the heat in the vivarium or you can run the risk of cooking the frogs
Also if your going to go naturalistic you will need additional lighting a good florescent bulb for the plants. _________________ Paul

Correct me if i am wrong, is it not Whites Tree Frogs you keep? If so, they really shouldn't be provided with any additional light during the hours of darkness. Whites Tree Frogs are nocturnal and thus 'come alive' after lights go out. If it is light 24/7 ( 12 hours of natural daylight and 12 hours artificial light ) it never really becomes night time. Try a non light emitting heat bulb instead, connected to a thermostat. _________________ Fraser Gilchrist

See I admit I seem to have been very misinformed when I originally got set up.... which is why I'm here. I want to correct everything. Anyways. When I was first got set up I was told to have a Day Glo heat light. (day time light) and then have the Heat Glo light for night time. Which is read and they said the frogs wouldn't even notice it. Which I find my frogs don't even notice it really. They still become active when the lights in the room are shut off and the only light on is the Red Heat Glo light.
Anyways I aim to fix this when I get my new set up. But as of right now my problem is that I've been having to keep my Red Heat Glo light on 24/7 becasaue anytime I unplug it it burns out. Is it the bulbs or do you think there is something wrong with my lamp?
So I'm also writing all your suggestions down... so I need a florescent light for when I get my plants, and should I be going with the under tank heater on a thermostat then? _________________ "We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." ~ Immanual Kant |

Thanks ok.
Is a under tank heat pad still better?
And any idea about why it keeps burning out if I unplug it? _________________ "We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." ~ Immanual Kant |

I would try the bulbs in another lamp. if it still burns out when switched off then you know the bulbs are crap. or try another make of bulb. |

Do you mean the plug on the electrical socket, may be a loose connection.
I can't see any reason that switching off power to a bulb can cause it to burn out because you are withdrawing power, so there is no voltage or current to burn it out with. The only thing I can think of is you are causing a short by moving the cable as you unplug, but even that does'nt convince me. Have you tried a differnt sort of bulb in it. I assume it's an a/c and not d/c bulb?
