I have much experience with reptiles, but little with Panther chameleons. From what I have read Panthers can be very prolific if short lived in captivity. I have books like "Care and breeding of Chameleons (panthers,veiled, jacksons and parsons)" in the AVS range of books that suggests this, and gives the impression they are not that hard to breed. So question to those who have bred them, why are so few bred in the UK ? What is the problem ?

I dont think breeding them is the problem, its raising the young, Panther babies can be extremely hard to raise and arent tolerant of mistakes in husbandry, thats my slant on it anway Smile

Karen, from what I have seen you write on other posts, you clearly have alot of experience in this field. I think alot of the Panthers in the shops are coming from overseas, very few seem to be bred in the UK. Even if you "lose" half the young there are still should be quite a few survivors. So I guess alot of keepers that have pairs never get eggs or good eggs ?

I do know however they arnt often seen in reptile shops well not up this way, maybe breeders just sell them to the people directly or to other breeders, i havnt got numbers for imports of panthers per year so i cant comment on that Smile

There are people who post on here who breed panthers i am sure they will give their input Very Happy

Thanks for that. I know Marcus Langford is a regular breeder of them, but is there anybody else in the UK that you know of ?

I have 100's of baby panthers available. Red, blue bar Ambanja, Blue bar Ambilobe and Sambava. Breeding panthers is very straight forward, hatching the eggs can be a problem sometimes. I have hatched 1000's of babies and rarely lose any now. The trick is to keep them dry apart from spraying twice per day. Keep them constantly humid and they will suffer respiratory problems.

Breeding panthers if you have the time and commitment like lee is not a very hard thing to do...but easy is not the right word for it no chameleons are easy to keep.
As karen has said one mistake can cause major problems,i have lost quite a few in my time keeping them,they are all different tho some storm along and grow very well,and some are very slow in growth.
I breed my animals but its a hobby for me not a source of income.i dont think there is a massive demand for them and i think it would be a shame if they were bred on mass.
Keeping chameleons is a lifestyle they are creatures of habit and need routine.
there are lots of breeders out there but most are quite low key,but there out there.
