PostPosted: Sat Dec 08, 2007 9:52 pm    Post subject: New Odatria sub-species? Reply with quote

Over a year ago an old friend and business partner returned from Western Australia, he had been out there for approx 7-8 months working on distributing reptile equipment. On his return he immediately told me of caudolineatus he had seen at a reptile dealers place that were different in appearance to what we know they look like in captivity outside Australia.
He said they were greenish in colour although not green like a prasinus, also they had a reddish brown head colouration. Of course I was skeptical as all the animals I had seen in person were not as he had described. Anyway last weekend several of us varanid breeders across Europe met up on the continent. Here I was told of a possible new sub-species of glauerti found in a location not previously documented and also of a new population of another odatria species, all these animals differed in pattern, size and colouration to what we already know. At this moment in time I cannot reveal these locations as work in still in progress once the taxonomy is finished I am sure the people doing the study will receive the credit they deserve.

I thought it was very interesting and exciting news to all varanid enthusiasts.

Sounds fascinating Sean, do you know who is running the taxonomic research?

Fair reply, do you know much on the analysis? Is it purely morphological or is there a molecular (mtDNA or allozyme) aspect to the differentiation? The whole Odatria group needs serious re-organisation anyway! At least the introduction of a new subspecies will (hopefully!) give a boost to funding for some much needed analysis!

The actual in depth analysis I cannot really comment on as I do not know what tests are actually being carried out. All I can tell you is that the differences that I know of are visual external ones and the locations of the animals but I cannot comment on what I actually do know in depth as it would be unfair to do so at this present time. Hope this will be of help.

I think he's talking about Varanus bushi...

Cheers,
Chad

No Chad, What I am talking about is something completely different it as nothing to do with bushi. The animals that I am talking about for example one comes from a location not prevoiusly documentated for this species and the animals in this localitiy show differences to the ones found in existing known areas.

Other than bragging about how you "know about" these new unknown variants which nobody else here does (something which you seem to take great pride in, given your history of posts), what does this post actually offer or contribute?? All you have done here is basically say "I know about these new animals, but I'm not going to tell you anything about them". How is this constructive, or of any help or value to participants of this forum?

I personally know about five new species which are currently being worked on/described from Papua, Indonesia alone, however since there is nothing which can be reported on them at the moment, I have chosen not to post nothing about them. Bragging about knowing "privileged" information isn't not my cup of tea either...

Bob, All your posts always seem to take a bitter twist. Yes I know for sure about these animals and also the people involved know as well and for the time being this is all that matters. Thank you for your contribution.
