I have a leopard gecko called Treackle and shes worrying me and has been for a while. For 3 months she hasnt eaten all that well and had the odd locust or waxworm per week and shes slowly losing weight. People have just been saying to me oh shell be fine as long as her tail still remains fat. She still has some fat in her tail but not no way near as fat as she used to be. Her neck is a little thinner and shes sleeping a lot more and shes not to bothered where she sleeps whilst before shed only sleep in a specific cave.

I dont know exactly how old she is. Ive had her for at least 6 years and the bloke who had her before us sed he had her for about 3 years wether or not she was a baby when they got her I dont know.

Some one from a reptile shop sed that shes an old age pensioner. Is around 8-9 years old for a leopard gecko? Could her body be shutting down because of age

has anyone else had this fasting. And what is even stranger is that over the past 3 months shes shed 3 times. Why is this?

Well Leopard Geckos live to 15/20 years. So no she is not a pensioner.

If you could tell us more about the viv;
Temps on the hot and cold ends
Substrate
Size of the viv
Is the viv only have one leo in it?

Just som emore general info would be good!

Jake

Treakle has always been on her own and her viv is a 3ft long viv. Shes on a bath towel ill say now she cant ingest or rip of anybit of it to impact her.

Her temps in hot end are 100 degrees farenheit
and cool end is 85 degrees farenheit

Ive got some hydrolife and had been giving it to her daily because i was told its an appetite stimulant but its not working really

Maybe you should change the substrate. Maybe to newspaper or kitchen roll. Im sure theres nothing wrong with it, buit ive never heard of bath towel being used...

Do you have plenty of hides on each end of the tank?

She won't be eating because (if the temps were accurately taken with a digital thermometer) she is way, way to hot and will be sulking.

Leopard geckos need a temperature gradient of 90F - 70/75f to be able to cool and warm themselves as they require.

They go off food when stressed and being to hot and unable to cool down will be the main reason.

So firstly get an accurate digital thermometer, one with a probe is best (around £10 - £15) then adjust your thermostat (i assume your heat source is attached to one) so that the temp is 90F on the floor of the warm side hide/cave.

Then dont offer any food for around a week, stick to this even if it seems cruel (it isnt') and then after that offer one insect.

Remove the bath towel, thats a bad substrate, she will catch her claws in it. Use paper towel if you don't like sand, but don't worry about impaction thats just an over worried about thing that is easily avoided with regular food dusting and having a bottle cap of pure calcium in the viv.

Finally don't ask the pet shop for advice, if they think they only live for 8-9 years they know nothing about leopard geckos.

Sorry for the tremondously long post! Wink
