How big a problem is IBD? I have been reading a bit in a book about it and it claims that its a bigger problem than alot of people realise, id just like peoples opinions on it.

If it's in your collection and you have a large number of boids then yes it would be a complete nightmare for you.

With regards to how widespread it is, well I'm not so sure on that. I don't know of anyone with it in there collections at the moment or even in the last 5 years. In fact I've not heard first hand of a single CONFIRMED case in the UK, although without doubt I'm sure there are / have been quite a few cases.

In the USA a big boid breeder had it and had his entire collection put down to stop it spreading, so that shows you how serious it should be taken.

As said on a a previous thread, I did have a boa here that had IBD, it was PTS and confirmed via post mortem, at the same time my vet had 2 jungle carpet pythons come in, 1 was confirmed with IBD and I'm not sure what happened to the other, the vet kept it to monitor to see if it would show symptoms.

So that's 2 confirmed cases of IBD that I know of, about a couple years back in my area.

the reason I started the thread is because I have a book called the boa constrictor manual, its one of those herpetocultral library books, and in the chapter about diseases which is written by Roger Klingenberg, he really stresses how big a problem IBD is, in fact almost all of the diseases and problems he talks about he also links back to how they are possible signs of IBD, anyone that has read it will know what I mean.

One thing im not entirely clear on though, is it a disease that only effects boids, and cannot effect any other kind of snake??

my understanding is it affects boas and pythons, and a snake can carry the disease for some time before showing symptoms, therefore it can arrive unseen in your collection before you realise its there. I did hear of someone who had 36 snakes destroyed because of this disease, about a year ago.
