I don't know how to say this without sounding irresponsible, or mean, etc.
I know how to look after Cresties, Cody seemed happy enough, and I've got access to all the books we bought as I can just borrow them from Jon. I have the fundage for a nice new set up similar to how Cody's is, trial and error the first time round means that now I'd know how to set it up properly.
However.. and it's a big however.. I'm not going to be able to feed a prospective new pet bugs. Of any sort. No crickets or locusts. Now I know people will probably say that if I'm serious enough about wanting another one, then I should get over this stupid fear etc.. and you'd be right. But it's not just me. I still live at home and there's no way, straight up, that my mum will allow insects in the house!
If I get one, I'm hoping keep him on a CGD diet, with baby food and pureed fruit for variation. But then I'm worried that I'm just being downright mean for not allowing him/her to 'hunt' for their food, and get nutrients that come from 'live' food.
Awww man!
Also, (sorry, I really will shut up in a minute!) Cody hated his CGD. And I mean really hated it! Stopped eating it, wouldn't eat for days until we gave him baby food or pureed fruit, and now as far as I know, he's fed mainly locusts (eeewwww) which he loves. What happens if I get a Crestie that hates the CGD...?! It just wouldn't be fair would it. |

All I can say is that there is no guarantees that a new crestie will CGD. I know many people do succesfully feed cresties on it but you have to consider another one wouldn't.
Besides which it's hardly natural trying to replace insects in an insectivores diet. Half the fun is watching them hunt! _________________ Kind Regards,

I wouldn't have a problem if someone fed 100% CGD to their crested but obviously there is always that chance that it won't like it.
The best I could suggest is buying an adult that is already eating it and also make sure you make the same mix with CGD so that it carries on eating it ok.
If you like I'll have a look to see if I have any that I'm 100% confident will eat CGD exclusively and you could buy one. _________________

See that's totally what I mean. And now I'm wondering if I'm just being selfish by wanting one...? |

Well I suppose if you could find a crestie that had never had any livefoods then maybe that wouldn't be so unfair. What you've never had you can't miss right?
Although I'm sure a more healthy crestie would have a good balance of the two and so you might end up with a weak one, especially if it refused the CGD. |

Lots of people succesfully keep cresties on CGD.
4 years ago I couldn't touch a cricket, now I stick my hand in a box of hundreds and pull a handful out at a time to throw in vivs. You would be surprised, but you can slowly reduce your sensitivity to them over time. There are other insects you could feed from time to time that wont jump about such as waxworms, mealworms, phoenix worms, silkworms and patchnoda worms - obviously of appropriate sizes. That may add a bit of variety to the diet. _________________ Cheers Angi

I know this is a bit irrelevant to your question but I'm curious.. Has something happened to Cody? You keep talking about him in the past tense........... _________________

If Scott can supply you with a CGD eating crestie I see no problem on the level of care.
Personally I have laready stated my thoughts on CGD but they don't neccessarily have to effect you. Phil makes an interesting point but I would disagree on the grounds that it is instinct that makes crestie's hunt, not a preference like us eating salad or burger.
That being said it's entirely down to you, I do think you could work on the insect thing, I knew one girl who used to use disposable rubber gloves to avoid touching the insects directly. Great fun watching the excitement when a gecko see's its prey. _________________ Kind Regards,

Really interested to read this thread because my crestie (9 months old) won't eat live crickets at all even though I was told she'd been fed on them and CGD before. She loves CGD which I mix with liquidized mango and banana and she will eat the t-rex dried crickets (given just once a week). I've had her 3 months and she's grown really well and seems very healthy so not all cresties need crix. |
