Well I'm planning on getting my 11month old male crestie a female on Sunday. The female is 18months and around 35g. She is coming with her tank.
I have some questions...
Should I quarantine her and for how long?
When can I put them together (weights/ages)?
Can they live together all year round?
What is the usual method of providing a nest box and could someone give me a run down of what to do if I find eggs?
Thanks in advance and I will post this up on a couple of forums I visit so if you do post in one then I'll let you off for not posting in the other |

yes you should quarantine, for about 3 months i think is the recomended time. this may seem long but trust me you dont want to know what COULD happen if you dont.

at the age they are now after 3 months qurantine they should be ready.
Can they live together all year round?
yep they sure can, its totaly up to you, as long as you have good cover in the enclosure and it is a decent size.
What is the usual method of providing a nest box and could someone give me a run down of what to do if I find eggs?
cant help too much on this one as iv not bred mine yet but im sure others will be along to help soon!
remember to post piks of the new arrival!!!

The other 2 I agree with, will add a bit onto the 3rd one, and answer the 4th for you.
Can they live together all year round?
As has been said, you can keep them together all year round, but it is wise to give a 'cooling period' around winter where you drop the temperatures a bit. This is to stop them breeding, and give the female a chance to build up Calcium again instead of using it all on eggs. (I think that's the reason anyway, it is what I've read)
What is the usual method of providing a nest box and could someone give me a run down of what to do if I find eggs?
My crestie didn't lay in the nest box I provided, but I'm sure that depends on the lizard and substrate, I have orchid bark and it just lay in that. But a nesting box should be about the size of an ice cream tub, filled with a moist substrate (Moss or Vermiculite would be best) so there is about 2 inches left at the top. You can then put a lid on the top with a hole in, big enough for the crestie to get in, this would be good as it would make her feel more secure, however if crickets were to get in, they wouldn't be able to get out, so you can choose on that, just make sure you keep the substrate moist (Though not too moist, so when you squeeze it it stays in a ball, but doesn't drip is about right)
And if you find eggs you need something to put them in (I use an empty ice-cream tub) and you can use an incubator if you want, but I find the temperatures are about right in my house.
If just using an Ice Cream tub or something you need a moist substrate in there such as Perlite or Vermiculite, I use a mixture of both and I don't have to keep spraying as by having the lid on it keeps the substrate moist, just make sure you take the lid off every couple of days to get a bit of an air flow.
Hope this helps, though other people may have a different view on things.
Sorry about ranting on a bit!
Good luck,

Thanks for the quick and very helpful replies, any more will be welcome as it's always good to gain knowledge from people rather than just reading it from a book.
So do you think I would not need an incubator? |

It depends, it would be more reliable, really depends on how much money you would want to spend one one.
As I've said, I don't keep mine in an incubator, and 1 of the eggs in the first clutch is definately getting bigger, which I'm guessing means there is a lizard developing inside, so for now I think it's ok.
Also, should you not use an incubator, you will need to find somewhere that keeps at a temperature between 70 and 80 degrees faranheit (Sp.), and make sure it doesn't go above 80.
The advantage of using an incubator would be that you have complete control (Unless there is some sort of electrical fault) over the temperature.
I was originally going to make an incubator as those that you can buy are very expensive, and from what I worked out, it was going to cost at least £50. (I'm 15, so that's a lot to me!).
So if you don't mind sparing 'a bit' of money, then an incubator would be good, but not essential. _________________ 1.1.1 Crested Geckos

I bought a Hovabator, and its one of the best bits of kit i've bought. Its a very good incubator it cost £70 and is very sensitive to the temp. I did build my own to start with but found that it didn't keep the temp steady enough, although this method has worked for others, I just prefer the Hovabator.
I use it for my beardie eggs, and can register a drop in temp as low 0.1 degrees. But there are others available that may suit you better try the link below for some ideas!
