its a lot quicker for pinkies to just be thrown to the ground at speed at this will kill them instantly alot quicker than CO2 but CO2 is an option if you dont like the thought of killing them by hand.

You can kill pinkies with CO2... it just take a long(er) time to do so. |

I almost feel bad disagreeing with such an authoritative statement, but disagree I must as you are incorrect. Baby mice and rats need oxygen to survive, just like any other mammal. If they have no oxygen, then they will not be able to breathe, and as such they will die - it definitely does work!
Co2 takes longer than chucking them about, but I personally find it more humane if it's done correctly. If done correctly it will not cause stress. It is of course personal choice what you believe is the best way to euthanise an animal, but Co2 definitely will kill any size of mammal you like. |

Agree it does work but it is a long process and if you haven't done it before it's very easy to remove them too soon only to see they all 'wake up' 20 / 30 minutes later. _________________

i agree CO2 works well and is humane for adult mice and other mammals, chicks etc but it does prolong the death in pinkies and i would say it is much more humane to just kill a pinkie instantly with a quick throw to the floor (it sounds gruesome but isnt) the pinkie feels nothing as it happens too quickly

I read all the posts on all pages of this thread. You also said prior to that "CO2 doesnt work on them. lungs not big enough.", which was the statement I was responding to initially, and the second post I responded to made no mention of speed, just that Co2 doesn't work on them.
But I am glad we are agreed. Co2 does work, but it takes longer for pinkies. It is personal preference as to whether you consider this to be more or less humane than chucking them at the floor. Personally I feel that Co2 until they're unconscious and then freezer is the best method for me. |

Apologies for the confusion, The Eggman. It appears I was using a different definition of the word "working" to you - my definition of it was "the method succeeds in killing the animal", while yours was "the method succeeds in killing the animal quickly". I'm still interested in how it's related to the size of their lungs

Really, for tiny unconscious pinkies (as opposed to awake adult or subadult mice)? I'd be interested in more information on that, as it does contradict what I've been told previously.
I've always been told that because of their size and lack of fur, the crystallization effect that causes such pain and distress to adult mice doesn't occur, and as such it's considered humane. I would appreciate opinions from other people on this ... |

True, but isn't this a disucssion for people that don't want to PHYSICALLY kill them? |

i would think that crystalisation still happens as the blood still freezes for crystalisation not to happen the blood would have to be frozen instantly, but when freezing the blood slowly freezes.
i know we are talking about unconcious pinkies but just thought id say if anyone was freezing awake pinkies that its one of the most inhumane ways of all.
