Hi I just had some of these delivered to live with my matids, they seem to be inundated with mites running very fast all over them..

Various sources say different things about them, any idea what to do and if they are ok?

Millipedes do have a certain mite that lives on their body. They are there to help keep the millipede clean, they eat all the nasty stuff. So some is fine but if your millipede is just crawling with them, then you can use vasalene on a cotton bud or an alcohol based liquid to wipe some of them off.

From my own research on this they will only attach themselvs to millipedes and will do no harm to other insects or you if they get on you!

So don't worry, a little is good, but to many-wipe some off. You'll have to judge how many is too many!

Hope this helps. Wink

there are not gazillions of them and I have taken a few of them off with a cotton bud and some vodka but I was just a little concerned in case they may harm them!

I have seen imported pedes swarming with them, my gigas oddly enough have none at all, and I have had them two years and they are thriving.

Quite a few species of pede have external and internal parasites some of which are essential for the well being of the pede.

i know with some species of centipede (I know not quite the same) that they have mites that are harmful to them. Spiders also I think get bad mites.

If you do decide to clear them up then I've heard that the hypoaspis mites will eat the other mites but not bother the pedes. The same ones that are used to control snake mites and scarid fly for gardeners.

My millepede had a lot of these in his tank a few months ago. I got rid of them by just cleaning out his tank thoroughly.

I don't think they do any harm, as there were quite a few in there for a long time (pede was buried for months!)
