Hi
I hope someone could answer my questions!!
I set up my first vivarium yesturday but im a little worried about my baby beardy.....spike!!
Firstly, when i was going to bed the first night i noticed there was some condensation on one side of the glass. I have read that beardys prefer low humidity levels. Condensation on the glass to me says that there is moisture in the air. I took his bowl of water out before going to bed but it was still there the following morning.
Is this condensation ok. If not what do i do?
Secondly, I gave him about 6 crickets this morning but the crickets scurried off and hid under the piece of rootwood i have in there. So i put two crickets near him and he ate them. Will he go and look for the others when hes ready. I have read that crickets can attack the beardy.Im worried!!
Lastly, I have artificial plants in the viv and have noticed spike licking them should i spray them with water so he can drink or will he use the bowl? If i spray water wouldnt that moisten the air more? I already have condensation!!! Im really worried about him eating and drinking!!
Please help!!! |

Yep, you need to reduce the humidity, try to find the cause. A water bowl will not be the direct cause but a water bowl near a heat source maybe?

Until he gets a little bigger and faster at catching crickets, either feed 1 or 2 to him directly or use locust, these don't tend to hide and are easier to catch (better food source too, although a little more expensive than crickets). Adult black or brown crickets can bite and even kill bearded dragons, but by placing a small piece of apple or carrot in the viv for the crickets, they would sooner eat that and leave your lizard alone.
Lastly, I have artificial plants in the viv and have noticed spike licking them should i spray them with water so he can drink or will he use the bowl? If i spray water wouldnt that moisten the air more? I already have condensation!!! Im really worried about him eating and drinking!!
I wouldn't spray the plants, they 'lick' most new objects in their environment, it's there way of investigating. Reduce the condensation and then if you are concernd you lizard isn't getting enough water, you can feed leafy salad that has been sprayed with water.

thanks for the speedy reply!
Could the source of the condensation be the bark im using for the substate? Should i take it all out and dry it thouroughy. Spike is only 4 weeks so would locusts be too big for him? |

I would be tempted to remove the bark chips totally, bark chips and bearded dragons don't really go together (bark chips are woodland related, beardeds are desert related )
I would chnge over to play sand (that is 100% dry) or bird sand (with crushed oyster shells in).
I use calcium sand for all my dragons, straight from hatching. Other people use no substrate for babies and sand for adults (due to the small risk of gut impaction from swallowing substrate). _________________

i also use sand.. play sand.. and like scott have kept very small bds on it with no problems..
there is a risk of impaction with any substrate, just a matter of finding one with the least risk IMHO..
some i know, keep small beardies on nothing at all.. as it gives the crix nowhere to hide (like under kitchen towel - another popular baby bd substrate.. which i have also seen pics of them eating..)
cress is a good one for babies and veg.. you can cut the cartoon down and so put the whole growing lot in.. and then water it so it does not dry out and die.. i used to plant cress in little ramekins and leave it in
