It is great news that you managed to exchange it for a healthy one. Good luck with the new one and we are all looking forward to seeing the pics.

you were lucky the shop let you exchange it good luck with your new leo
its so sad to see that shops can sell leos in such bad conditions.
i,v found that when i'v rescued leos in this condition very few survive
as when they start to refuse food it take's a lot of time and tlc to get them started again.
look forward to seeing your pics. |

Here you go all, pics of the new boy as promised.
It is a real same about the first little guy, I would have loved to have turned him around and seen him grow and thrive, but been through the heartache of neglected pet shop specimens with a beardy from the same place (different owner at that time) and when I had to have him put down at 09.00 on new years day by the vet on call I vowed never to have to go through it again because of somebody elses ignorance and neglect! _________________ 1.0.0 Eublepharis Macularis (albino)

Passing off leos that are not thriving to inexperienced buyers is all too common.
It happened to me and I thought the shop was good until then. |
yep, too true, although half the time the shops have no idea what's good or bad. _________________

Hey Slate,
I am sorry to hear about your first leo, but glad to see they made right by you. As several have said, sadly the first leo will probably just be resold as it was. Your new guy is a cutie! Looks to be a Tremper Albino to me.
Being from the US, I think we carry on the sand debate more then any people in the world. I use tile and shelfliner myself for my leos, dragons and two of my snakes (a royal and a RTB). My corns are on aspen, but fed f/t outside the tank. My cresties are in three different vivs. My two large adults do have bed-a-beast to aid in humidity, but my sub-adult is on paper toweling yet that I keep moist.
My point with all this is that the new guy seems to look healthy, overall. Maybe it is just the pic(s) - as sometimes pics do no justice at all - but his tail seems a lil thin to me as well. Not unhealthy thin from the pic, but thinner then I would like to see. If I were you I would certainly keep him on a solid substrate such as paper towel until you are sure he is eating, pooing and has a clean bill of health - and all are in line. If you put him back in the sand viv as the one you returned, you could potentially risk passing anything from parasites to crypto to him - if the first leo carried or was infested with either. The skinniness of the first ones tail could have been SO many things - could have been parasites, crypto, impaction, lack of food, lack of utilizing nutrients properly, etc. But if this new one's tail is at all on the thin side, I would get him out of the old tank - if he is in it and it hasn't been thoroughly disinfected - and get a fecal done asap. Then, in a few months, get another fecal. If he has a clean vet check and two clean fecals, he should be fine and will put on weight in no time if it was simply lack of food or proper supplements.
I am not trying to preach the whole "OMG, skinny tail (talking about first leo here) - your leo has crypto or parasites - or both - and is gonna die!" I hate when people bark at someone like that. I do get emotional at times and have myself been harsh to a point with some people, but I just wanted to offer my thoughts incase you did not know any above info.
Sorry to have rambled on and on. If you have any other questions, I am sure people will reply to this thread or you can PM me if you would like.
Good luck with this guy!

I beg your pardon?
You have an ill leo SHARING, UNQUARANTINED with your established collection?! Are you entirely mad? |

You did the right thing Slate. As upsetting as it is to see an animal as unhealthy as that, it is not your fault, and you paid good money for an animal which of course should be healthy.
I do fear that the animal will possibly be passed on to someone else, but it could only be to somebody unsuspecting. Unfortunately it does happen.
Let`s hope it doesn`t happen. It is far better that you did what you did though and didn`t attempt to bring it back to health as it is not your responsability, and the more that people do that, the more shops get away with it.
Best of luck with the new animal which looks a whole lot healthier.
Disclaimer; Not every Reptile retail outlet is guilty of such practices, some operate very well. This sort of thing is seen far to often for my liking though. _________________ YSBRYDOLI POBL, GWELLA LLEOEDD

opps!!!!
bad thing to do...
never ever buy a new animal and stick it straight in with your exisiting group!!!!!! never ever ever ever ever...

it does not help tho, when people do not follow simple basic quarantine practises... it should be common sense.. NOT to introduce a new animal into an established group, until you know its fit and healthy..
if the leo is a little unwell, then it should be on its own... having it in with other leos is going to make it worse...
you may not have known the history before you saw this no, but that is all the more reason to keep them apart from your collection until you can be sure they are in good health..
what if it has crypto.. if it has, you have just infected all your other leos with it.. not good...
