Why do you keep reptiles? What made you want to get one in the first place? Just wondering what everyone's personal reasons are:-)

Always wanted a snake when I was a kid as a friend of mine had a couple of garters..parents wouldn't allow it whilst I was at home so as soon as I moved out I started with a lovely amel corn..cost me a small fortune too back then lol... |

My cousin used to keep herps and as i have always loved all animals i was really facinated. I went to my first reptile show when i was about 7 and that made me really want some reps of my own. My cousin knew this so when i was 8 he gave me his Royal and a tank and heat equipment etc. and i still have that Royal (Bendy Wendy) today. Oh yeah, and i used to be obsessed with dinosaurs and had loads of toys etc. |

I remember being interested in them, but it wasn't until I moved to Shropshire. That was the first time I went into a shop that actually sold reptiles. I went in most Saturdays, and 4 years later after reading up and moving out I got my first lizard a baby Beardie. Since then I've read up got another
Beardie
Major Plated lizard
Gold dust geckos pair
Western Hognose
Corn Snake Pair (Male amel and Female Carolina)
Yellow Ackie Pair
Baja Rock Lizard Pair
Desert Horned Lizard male (2x females arriving in a month)
Uromastyx Geyri pair (Arriving later this week)
NosyBe Panther Chameleon hatchling pair (arriving with the Geyri pair)
So all these reptiles later, I am looking to make a few interesting breeding projects to creat enough capital to start breeding on a larger scale with that shop I used to visit as a kid. |

My interest started with my 21st birthday present. I have always loved animals, and in particular reptiles, and I wanted something different. I was thrilled when I received Charlie my first Leopard Gecko. Since then things have snowballed. I get my passion for animals from my Dad (who I share our collection with).

Blimey, great question. I never knew anyone with reptiles when I first started, if I look back I struggle to remember what made me think about reptiles. I was 8 or 9 when I got my first snake (chequered garter snake). From there I remember getting an agama (red headed), then a swift. None of these lasted very long, back then EVERYTHING was wild caught and there was nobody available to talk things over with. I had to learn everything from a few dodgy books (still got them somewhere ) and my own common sense (trial & error).
It wasn't until I was about 12 when my collection actually started growing and doing really well. This was the same time I found The Vivarium (sadly now closed). I used to visit the shop twice a week minimum, the two guys running it Dave Manning (now hires out animals for Show biz etc) & Robert Baltrock (not sure what he does now?) where very helpful and enthusiastic about helping people learn. I started working in the shop on the weekends (this increased my knowledge a 1000 times, as we were still dealing with mainly wild caught and 100's of different species, so I was learning something new everyday I was there).
It's been 16 years since I worked there, and the entire hobby has moved on incredibly since those early days. From struggling to find people to talk to about reptiles, I now have friends all over Europe, USA & Canada and can not only chat to them but also buy fantastic captive bred reptiles from them. _________________
