Depending on how you view it my two Albigs are pretty rare! They are both Varanus Albigularis Microstictus (true Black Throat Monitors)
I haven't seen anymore in the UK but if anyone finds a male let me know! I have two females who need a man! hahaha!

I'd consider these 4 as rare;
V.glauerti
V.pilbarensis
V.kingorum
V.a.acanthurus (red ackies) _________________

Yes Dan you are right I could find him one in fact many dozens, they are not what I consider to be rare in captivity not by a long shot. He does not need my help I am sure with a little research he will find one on his own.
I think every monitor is obtainable if you are prepared to search and obviously pay the money for the rarer animal.
telenesetes
glebopalma
rosenbergi
griseus
giganteus
spenceri
All of the above are rare but If you pay up then they are available. I can tell you that giganteus would set you back around £25000ea |

Varanus telenesetes available?? There has only been a single holotype ever documented for this species, and it is still debated whether or not this species named by Sprackland is even valid, or if the geographic data associated with it is correct. Recent herpetological expeditions made to Rossell Island, led by Fred Kraus et al. have turned up no such monitors, despite the presence of other varanid taxa (V. indicus) on the island. Where have you seen this species advertised, if you don't mind me asking? |

Hi Bob,
I never said I had seen it advertised, why you yanks certainly try and twist things round. I was just giving examples of what I consider to be rare and yes you are right with your information regarding telenesetes but just because a field study as not turned any up at Rossell does not mean it does not exist either.
Ok then I will give Keithhornei as another example as being rare in captivity. Oh and I must say that just because something is not known to science does not mean it does not exist, I will give you my personal experience, I had a varanid in my collection which I could not identify I showed it around to various academics and they could not identify it either. Last year I was sent photos of another varanid which I could not identify nor my piers. |
