|
|
This is purely just out of curiousity, but is something that I keep thinking about whenever I hear of people paying £1000's for a snake (or even more money than that, just read Peter Kahl paid $25,000 for his first albino boa, and that was in 1989!).
Whats the deal with insurance then? Surely it's a common thing to do, imagine if something happened to a 25 grand snake! Although there would be a sentimental sadness I would hazard a guess and say the financial loss would make me cry more!
Any info. would be much appreciated. |

Bit of both really!
If I had the money i'd be tempted to invest in some royal morphs myself but I would want to insure all the livestock. I found a site that insures reptiles but after reading through all the small print it seems that they can squirm their way out of paying for nearly every cause of death, particularly death from any complications in pregnancy/egg laying which would render the policy almost useless to a breeder i'm guessing?
I suppose it all goes hand in hand with experience. Those of us who pay out alot of money for a herp must have the confidence in their own knowledge and experience to keep it, so maybe they don't see the need for insurance?
C'mon everyone! I'm always seeing snakes on here that must have cost a few quid - are you lot insuring them? |

I'm in the states so it's may be a bit different. I've increased my contents insurance in my home owner's policy to cover my collection & keep records/photos stored in a safe deposit box. _________________ All the Best- Deb

Insurance is available, Exotic Direct does insure reptiles (last time I checked).
However you would need to check the small print to see what it excludes, alot exclude any death resulting from breeding complications, which is most likely to be the reason they would die.
Personally I don't insure mine against death from illness etc but would consider insuring against fire & theft but again this is still quite expensive (rough quote I had was £10 cost for every £100 in value, this is extremely expensive when compared to any other insurance. _________________

Cheers folks.
Seems insurance is a pretty pointless exercise by the time you trawl through the small print. Not cheap either!
Hadn't thought of contents insurance, would seem to be the best thing to do.
Best to block the cost out of our minds too eh? Same goes for when we're asked by partners/family/friends...

Now where did I put those remortgage documents... |
