You have to understand that every monitor is different. No one can answer your question honestly, they can only tell you of there experiences. Almost all Bosc monitors are wild caught or captive farmed (IMO worse than WC!) and so are usually very stressed and defensive. Even as baby's there bites can really hurt and there is no guarantee that they will ever "tame" (i hate that expression with monitors). If you feel you are truly ready for the commitment of one of these fantastic animals and you are ready to accept that you monitor may never tolerate being handled then get one.

Always plan for the worst. That way things can only get better.

I managed to tame a CF bosc, it was as tame as a BD Cool Didn't take long at all only 2 weeks max, to completely feel safe and secure and be hand tame etc

The only monitorsI keep (apart from the ackies) that I would classify as tame are the Mertons, & it's anyone's guess if they'll stay that way when they are grown. The sandies & lacies will get you every time if you're not quick enough to grab them in a position where they cant. Some of the sandies settle after you've been holding them for a while, most dont. Monitors are monitors: it's the nature of the beast!

I have a pair of lacies that are so used to people they'll mate on my rug while I lay on the floor and take photos (okay, so I'm weird)

I've raised another adult male which is now being used in educational shows - the owner walks around with it sitting on his hat or his shoulder.

The trick to 'taming' a monitor, tidge, is not to force handle it. Don't pick it up until it is ready. Do your normal enclosure maintenance, cleaning, changing the water dish etc, but don't try to pick it up. Eventually, when it is bigger, it will slowly come to realise you are not a threat and will calmly watch you. Then you can try stroking it gently under the chin, using very very slow movements. After a long while, it may become curious enough to approach your hands on its own. Only then do you start thinking of picking it up.

Great pics and top advice. Any attempt to pick up a reptile is initially interpreted as a predatory attack. So as Croc doc says, if after X amount of time and patience the animal feels safe enough to approach you, then you are turning a corner as regards to having a calm andd quiet lizard. Who knows, you may even end up handleing it. Smile

Good luck with it anyway. Smile
