Thanks for the replies, surely there must be one or two other species on par with the Ackies as first choice ? I will research the Ackies and decide what to do.
Thanks again |

Ackies are near perfect as captive monitors go,they are a good size have a good temperament, can be housed in groups, breed well and are fascinating to watch. |

It all depends on space and budget. If you want a small then get an ackie (they grow to about 2.5' but are slim and light and they can live all there lives in a 4x2x2) they are the cheapest and easiest to keep. A Bosc monitor is also a good first choice for those who want something a bit larger but remember they will need a large enclosure as adults (8x4x4 as a minimum in my opinion) they also eat a lot more than ackies!
I would not advise a large monitor species to start with (Niles, waters, albigs, crocs etc....) nor would i advise some smaller species that do not make good captives for first time keepers (Tree monitors, Argus, peach throats, blue tails etc....)
Hope this helps
