If he went for a nikon i would say the 18-70mm dx..very very sharp and covers nice area...but all depends what his priorities are..would also recommend the 50mm prime..cheap as hell and you have to use your feet to zoom but results are second to none. _________________

Great thanks for your help!
My main thing I will be doing is pictures of my reptiles but I would also like to be able to do other things like scenery etc as I travel a fair bit!
I think the D50 seems a good bet it looks likeit might be easier to use and give good results.
