17 pages of ranting on somones "opinion". Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. Just because you have an opinion doesn't make you right.
The thing is here is what we are talking about is the opinion of the MINORITY who thought Ralph was handling HIS OWN snakes in a slightly rougher manner as maybe they would have liked. Ralph is one of the most experienced breeders in the world and yet we have people on here (forum experts) questioning his ability to handle neonate snakes. Its laughable.
Llynn and Jezz may have the "opinion" that he is too rough. But their opinion is the opinion of two people who dont have 1% of the experience of Ralph when it comes to handling and dealing with neonate snakes. How many litters of royals have both of you hatched anyway???
I can't see how you can have any opinion on probing snakes if you can't even do it yourself. How can you have a fair and informed opinion on something you know absolutely NOTHING about???
While we are on the subject of probing, a snake does need to be held firmly whilst you are probing. Llynn, you may think you are being nice to the snake by using the softly softly approach but as human beings we have far more intelligence than snakes. When probing it is our responsibility to make sure that the snake cannot make any sudden movements when it has a probe in it. I have seen people try to support the snakes whole body softly only for the snake to pull away on the person holding it, pushing the probe deeper into its body. NOT a good thing. A good probing technique is for ONE person to hold the tail of the snake and not to have anyone or anything at the other end. That way the snake has nothing to pull itself away with. A good popping technique such as Ralphs will sex a neonate snake without pushing anything into it.
May I finish on saying that this whilst being my "opinion" it is based on facts and experience. Not just opinion for opinions sake. I have kept pythons since 1985 and bred since 1989.
I worked in one of the busiest reptile specialists in London and have done time in the reptile house in London zoo. |

Ralph is a bit rough, but nowhere near as rough as this fella:

I'd just like to say that herpetology is about opinions, ideas and what works for who.
Ralph hatches probably thousands of baby snakes a year & their all happy & healthy so i don't see where peoples problem is? _________________ Reptiles by Erik Paterson

ok can everybody please hold of with posting any further opinions until i've gone and bought a fresh 6pack?? i've just spend a lovely time reading all of you's opinions of which some are based on absolute nothing, and i went out of beer! hahaaha really some of the things that i've been reading are really puzzling. tubefeeding a little royal dogfood?????????????? and snakes that come up to greet you? excuse me but that's bull. the snake will come to see what's going on and probably expecting food coz that's mostly why you would open the viv (or tub) they don't give a rat's arse (nice choice of words haha) if it is you, me or donald duck feeding them, of course in time they will remember your scent and get used to it, but they don't care about it like a dog or a cat would. and then the bit about being to young to probe? that doesn't make sense either, 1 person will learn when they're 10 and some at 40 and yet others will never learn. learning to probe (or learning any kind of new skill) got nothing to do with age but with experience (and that you'll only learn when you do it) i'm not attacking anybody personally, but i've just giving my opinion on the matter _________________ 1.1 Hypo Salmon Boa (Gee Line)

you know im gettinga bit fed up with, in woodages words, assholes telling me im wrong, my opinion doesnt matter, i should shut up. well get this woody, my opinion matters as much as yours does, my husbandry is not up for you to discuss, if my partner thinks there is something wrong wi it, i will listen to him. he doesnt. i know how to hold a snake to probe it, i know how to do most things actually.
there was a guy used to come on here, he doesnt now, and his manners were a lot lot nicer than yours. his name was eggman.
and something else, if you are waiting for me to shut up, you have a long wait. _________________

wow lynne, i wasn't attacking in any way your husbandry. i've never seen the way you keep your royals and from what i've been understanding in other topic's you take care of your animals really well. the only thing i've said is that it doesn't matter to the royals, who opens the tub or viv on feeding day and that i've never heard of feeding an snake dogfood. so please don't feel like i've had a go at you coz i havent and i sure don't want you to shut up, you're a delight with defending yourself and where you stand for _________________ 1.1 Hypo Salmon Boa (Gee Line)

What I remember Llynn is over 20 years of successfully keeping and breeding snakes. Also treating a snake as a snake, not anthropomorphisising them as you seem to do. My opinion is based on experience where as yours seems to be based on treating your snake like a child. Best of luck with that. |

i fed my wee royal dog food, because without it she would have died. my snakes come to greet me, are you saying im a liar. if they were interested in the surroundings, they would head off, as it is they go up my arm onto my shoulders.
oh and by the way, it was my vet who gave me the dog food. next time will i let the snake die cause you think its ridiculas.
and if you think it doesnt matter who opens the vivs or tubs, ask pete what happens if he opens them. _________________

on the contrary, i treat all animals with respect. some children, and adults dont deserve respect.
