Whilst out looking for grass snakes, we also lost count of the lizards and slow worms that we encountered which was good to see. One female viviparous lizard in particular caught my eye as she was unusually coloured with very little patternisation. I have not previously seen one myself in the flesh of this colouration, although I know that others have done. I recently saw some images of a similar animal (which also happened to be female) that had been taken earlier this year in South Yorkshire.

The animal in this case was found in South west Wales. Here she is;

A "normal" type female from the same site for comparison. Both animals pictured are very much gravid.

Both stunning animals Pete, that first one I'd say is patternless and probably hypomelanistic.

I'd be very interested to see what the young look like (see if it's a recessive trait).

Cheers Scott Wink

She was released straight away but I`ll keep an eye out for any unusually coloured young. It`s a very undisturbed site, (virtually zero access by the public) with a good population so there should be a good chance of my seeing any of her progeny in the future.

Hi Peter,
Was talking to a friend yesterday about your find and he assures me there's a population of them pretty close by here Cool

When I get a chance I'll take a look.

Laughing When I was younger maybe, but I have no problem these day`s, the animal is far better off where it belongs. Wink

I must admit, it would be interesting to see the resulting progeny should this female`s path cross with that of a melanistic male.

Brett, keeping an eye on her, found her again in exactly the same spot today, a week later. She is still gravid, looks like she is about to burst. The other old lady was with her too. She looks even fuller. We found eight grass snakes at the site also. Smile
