Sorry but an invertebrate [cricket] is TOTALLY different to a vertebrate [rat], and as such should not be compared imo. _________________ Regards, Paul.

But it is still alive.
My point is that they are all alive and as such should all have an equal chance at living.
I understand that a fly is different to a human but only because we dominate the earth.
If you are religious then GOD made all living things. _________________ Joey (From Sunny Clacton-on-Sea)

i think the differance here is, in captivity its the norm for snakes to eat defrost, althought there are thousands that may never eat defrost. but chams, beardies etc, will only eat live. please dont get me wrong, iv never had to feed live and i hope i never have to. i dont agree with it if the snake will eat defrost and its being fed live for the sake of it. i do agree that sometimes it has to be done.
and i said it before, i think wee hoppers are the cutest things out. _________________

not trying to sound big headed but in 21 year's of keeping snakes i have only ever feed 1 live goldfish to an albino Cali king and that was my first snake.
i am a firm believer of patience with snakes and they will come round to frozen/thawed in their own time.
i have only ever had a real problem with feeding baby house snakes and i still never resorted to live feeding or even force feeding.
every snake is different and has it own personal tastes - likes and dislikes and should be treated as appropriate.
i have taken in many baby Chondro's from shop's or friend's that have had trouble getting them feeding and with some patience and time they just come round to it, even if it means me trying small simple thing's like,
different time of day,
different way of defrosting the prey item,
different way of presenting the prey item, from tongs to finger's to left in a confined space over night.
yes sometimes you will lose the small battle with an animal and waste some food but we do it ourselves all the time.
i know a someone that has had zoo experience with reptiles and has killed many snakes due to his lake of patience with getting animal feeding and still thinks he is a good reptile keeper!

great thread , and yup its NOT illegal to live feed but do it in front of an audience and it could be construed as animal cruelty by RSPCA/SSPCA
if it comes done to live prey feed or dead snake ...live all the way ....its what happens in wild .
we are actually starting to breed Multi's ( one is pregnant ) hopefully afer a few months we will have a good supply of food ( mostly F/T tho )
I am not looking forward to dispatching them tho _________________ 3.7.0 Royals

pete has written 'we'. 'we' dont, he does. there would be absolutely no point in me doing this as there would be no way i could kill them or fling them in alive. there are 100's of things to try before you need to feed live. i have had one almost commit suicide before she would eat. she is now 400 odd grams, and growing .where she was 54gms. i didnt have to live feed.
but each to thier own. also, i read over and over, 'they wouldnt get this in the wild'. OUR snakes have never lived in the wild, unless wild caught. they probably wouldnt survive in the wild. so i dont see any comparison. just my opinion.
also the feeling of satisfaction when you get a non feeder to feed without throwing in a live rodent is immeasurable. _________________

What's your opinion, therefore, of feeding live to a WC snake? _________________ A lil bit of Madagascar

wc in my opinion, shouldnt be restricted to tubs and vivs. i accept its done, i wouldnt, in that case live must be fed. and can i add, your in trouble. i read your forum. _________________
