You cant expect an average filter to filter a big monitors water biologically but it can to a certain extent mechanically filter it.
I used a fluval 4 to filter a bath, all the filter media were removed and just the 3 baskets left in it, this would mechanically filter out the fur, feathers etc and i had a big net to hand so i could just fish out any other solids before they broke up or bloked it. Despite this the water would colour up in several days and had to have very regular changes but as you know you cant be there all the time so he had a seperate drink bowl.
This animal was also a V salvator, he had a sunken bath in his 17 ft viv and to not have had it in there i would have missed out on so much behaviour _________________ http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Bird-fly/

Sounds a great idea-i'll look into that. The only thing that worries me is weight. The shed is in a room with a wooden floor, and I'm not sure it would bear the weight of the shed plus a bath full of water. _________________

Perhaps, if you wanted to go down that route, you could make his water "container" wider and shallower to spread the wait and put a few strengthening crossmembers underneath ? its entirely up to you, if you do though, think about plumbing the drain hole in, its so much easier and quicker to drain and clean.
As you are just starting furnishing his viv now might be easier than later?
If you dont mind me saying there is an awful lot of un usable space in the shed-vivs height, you and your monitor would benefit from even a couple of extra floors, my 6ft+ salvator could climb a rough cut 2x4 with ease and tripod to reach things you wouldnt think he could reach _________________ http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p17/Bird-fly/

Great idea for a viv. Looking forward to seeing photos when you have it finished.
I'd love to have a water monitor myself having seen the one Dave has up at Scales and Tails, but I just don't have the room for something that size I'll just have to stick to my dwarf monitors. |
