some snakes (including royals) eat better, breed better and feel better in the curvers (plastic basins) most breeders will keep the snakes in those 4 life. don't forget that in the wild snakes stay in tiny little holes 4 weeks on end and will only come out 2 feed and than go straight back in. so the rack system helps the snake 2 feel safe and therefore it will do better than a snake that has a large tank. however it is also a personnal choice, i keep mine in tanks but do have friends that keep them in racks and they r doing just fine. also on the subject that royals can (and will) refuse food 2 to 3 months, i mean that it is an every year reoccuring refusal, and it is coz of mating season. even if u only have 1 royal, it's the rime of the year that tells him/her that it's mating season Wink

Another good option for a starter snake, aswell as Royals and Corns are Common Boa's. If you get a baby, you'll grow with it. They are docile, easy to handle, excellent feeders and very similar (if not the same) to house as Royals.

The thing you have to bear in mind is that males get to about 5 - 7ft and females 7 - 9 feet. Males will eventually need at least a 4 foot long viv/ tub and females a foot longer than that. Of course, you also have the dwarf Boa's such as Hogg Island and El Salvadour.

If you've made your mind up about Royal's then fair play to you and enjoy. They are wonderful snakes and I love them.

another really nice boa that will stay small is the Honduran boa. they are very pretty and r easy 2 keep. the hog island is also a nice boa but some of them can still get quite large, compared to the size of a royal that is!
