|
|
Hi
Can anyone point me in the direction of a directory of all the different panther localities? I can think of about 7 or 8 off the top of my head but I've come across a few others recently that I'd never heard of.
Is there a definitive list of is there disagreement on what is and isn't a true locality?
Examples of some of the ones I'd not heard of are;
Jofraville, Nose Faly, Oorana Mena, Sirama, and Ankify.
Thanks!

Hi Stu,
You want to see all the localities then check this site.
www.statoids.com/jmg.html.
I cant see every locality having different colours apart from the ones that are restricted to islands. The main land localities must interbreed! Whats stopping them? |

Hi Stu,
After doing some research on the whole locality thing, its seems all these rare locales are actually located in the same region just under a different name.
Could this be the exporters in madagascar changing the name to try and get more money (if it is, it seems to be working!). |

There are many distinct locales and only some are represented in captivity. Many locales actual origin are kept secret by exporters for some time and marketed under another name to try to prevent other exporters from collecting them. Sirama was the name applied to a lot of the original Ambilobe exports as was Picasso. Oorana Mena was the marketed name for Nosy Faly. Nosy Mitsio was marketed as Mafana and the list goes on.
The locales such as Nosy Mitsio, Nosy Be, Nosy Faly, Nosy Borah, etc., are all island locales. On the mainland, there actually does appear to be a certain degree of environmental barriers in the form of plateaus, etc., that minimize a lot of the hybridization of many locales with seemingly close but distinctly colored locales. These adjacent locales often share a number of similarities since they share a similar most common ancestor but they do show distinct differences, despite their close proximity. Examples include Ambanja and Ambato. These locales are very close to each other but show quite distinct patterns if you pay attention.
