ive always used wood shavings until was told that this wasnt a good substrate. Want to use paper now, kitchen roll as its thick. But was wondering if people use anything to put between heat mat, glass and paper. To stop temp getting to hot. I was advised a thermostat, but havent been able to have a look at the petshop since told this. Was just wondering what other people did, knowing that geckos dont feel temperature the same way we dont. Dont want him cooking Razz

A thermostat will control the temperature of your heatmat and is a MUST have piece of equipment.

To answer your question though, the answer is no, there doesn't have to be anything in between the heatmat and the underside of the vivaria. I use Calcium Sand for my floor of my Leopard Geckos enclosure, i find this very good both in terms of function and aesthetics.
