Thanks both. Yes Lynne I agree the good old kitchen roll is a god send, mind the good old newspaper is damn good as well.

I've got the room nice and warm now, I installed an electric oil filledradiator in their the other night as it got so cold, I couldn't keep the ambient temps up in the rubs. So Far the varnished chipboard is working well, if a little saggy in the middle, but I'm going to get them all converted to conti-board, as we've found out we have a friend with a full size table saw to do the cutting for us Then I'll make them all lidless

if youve built a multi layer rack claire it doesnt matter about heat loss cos it just goes down into the tub below but it has to be a lidless rack to get the max benefit

If your planning to go lidless then a 10mm gap between the tub and the shelf above is a no-no !!!!
I have just built a rack that had an 7-8mm gap and one of my 1200g females got through it !! no messing.....

If I was going to build it again I would make it as tight as possible as it is very rare you remove the entire drawer... if your worried about ventillation just melt some holes into the tub.

Thanks Jamie and DrAdam. I've got holes in the rubs already as they currently have lids on, but when I re-build fairly shortlyish I'm going to make them lidless, so I'll just go for a tight fight to be safe. Don;t want the little buggers escaping all over the place Bad enough trying to get them to sit still for photos

to answer one of your original questions, i use polyrtyrene tiles under the heat mats to insulate. Seems to work ok and dead cheap

Incidently, i have just read that you should leave a gap between the bottom of the tub and the head mat. Why is this, i would have thought that this would just cause loss of heat?

It's only a small gap, and due to the shape of the underside of the RUB.
