Ok, here we go. 3 of my new little babies that came fro Scott have now shed, and I have a couple more in blue. They have all shed perfectly, and pretty much whole apart from the odd little piece in their RUBS which I assume if from the rubbing about more than them having any problems. My dilema is this..................my other 4 large females who are on the quarantine rack down stairs seem to be having problems. The largest one who is probably hitting the 2kg mark by now, (incidentally who nearly ate my hubby last night, his own fault), when she shed last week she shed in pieces and has reatained her eye caps I THINK, and I also have Delta the smallest who came to me with retained eye caps that I now need to sort out. NOW, there are only 2 reasons I can think of for this difference.
1) The little ones are in better condition than the big girls
2) The humidity/room temperature isn't enough for the big girls.
The Babies are in 9L RUBS with just water bowls which I am moving to the middle of the RUBS when I notice them going into blue. The big girls are in 50L RUBS, with their water bowls in the cool end, and a moss/kitchen roll box in the warm end (well that's where they start), and I am also spraying them daily or at least every other day without removing their lids to keep temp and humidity up.
So basically, what am I doing wrong, or is it just an ambient room temperature issue as opposed to their RUB Ambient temp/humidity?
Sorry for the droning, thought it better to give more info so you can get the picture better
Then we can get into the whole cooling thing, which confuses me, not for the babies obviously _________________ www.draco2.co.uk

can you measure the humibity in the 50ltr's
See thing is , your saying you THINK it is retained , my advice , at the moment would be to leave be , and increase the humidity for next shed ,should come off then no probs ...only if there is a build up of a few caps do you get probs usually.

up the humidity a bit, but mt wee corns all shed in bits last time, and yet this time they are shedding perfectly, and i have done nothing differant. move water dish to warm end while they are in shed, that helps. _________________

So he general concensus of opinion is to basically just move the water bowls to the warm end when they go blue, and hopefully that should resolve it. The only other thing I can think of is that the room temperature down stairs is cooler than upstairs in the babies room, adn I know that cooler air doesn't hold humidity.
I believe the humidity in the 50L's is at around 60% normally, but with spraying it goes up to about 80% ish, having said that I am making the mistake or trusting one of those little dial exo terra Hygros, as I cocked up when I ordered the digi thermometers, I get temps in 2 places and humidity in none! If I spray they stay all sort of condensationiony in the front, but I think only for a short time. I've got one in blue now, so I'll go move the water bowl to the warm end, and hope that 'Hope' doesn't decide to re-organise during the night
The eye caps issue, 'Delta' came to me with wrinkly looking eye 'caps', and Crystal has now got them as well after her shed. 'Piper' my little Het Pied male had dents in the centre of his eyes before he shed, now his eyes are prefectly clear and not wrinkly at all, which is what led me to believe it was retained eye caps, I just don't fancy EVER having to try and remove eye caps, I'll get someone to do it for me if it becomes necessary. Much safer for my snakies than me poking about when I don't know what I'm doing. Yet another thing to add to my lessons required list _________________ www.draco2.co.uk

dents and wrinkles can be a sign off low humidity... and your right the 'dial' type ones are err poo.(IMO) I just dinny trust them ...there hides are ok tho lol. _________________ 3.7.0 Royals

the heat in the room where all my royals and the wee corns are is 80. so could br the air where the bigger ones are needs heated more. or you could just leave a moss box in permanantly, i know a few who do this and just keep spraying the moss. _________________

I might try moving the water bowls to the middle of the RUBS then and have a look at their eyes after a couple of days of them being like that. I guess it's much the same as us when we're tired, our eyes tend to go dry.
Now, about this whole cooling melarky.....................What SHOULD I be doing, as I know the 4 big girls were being cooled prior to me getting them, and I've just set their hotspots to 92f and I'm letting the ambient room temp do the rest, but I believe that that's completely wrong. I have been giving them what i believe to be slightly smaller food items than they wouldnormally take, having said that, I think Delta the smallest should be having somewhat bigger than she has had the last 2 feeds, I barely got the weaner in the box last night before she nabbed it off me, and 5 minutes later she was looking at me as if to say "well that sorts starters, when's my main course coming" Crystalthe big mumma is taking mediums happily, as are the other 2. I've read loads about cooling, and I seem to be failing to get my head around it properly, and I know it's REALLY important for breeding. Educate me oh wise and wonderful people ! _________________ www.draco2.co.uk

Lynne, I've got a moss box in with them all permanently, I read someone on here does that, although 1 now has layers of kitchen roll as she decided to use it as a toilet I think you might be right about the room temp, I'm going to be on a draught exclusion mission tomorrow, the babies room is about mid to high 70's, downstairs it's a TAD cooler, especially with the glass missing out of the porch surround and no door on the dining room. I hope they don't decide to take a liking to the small on Turkey boxing day, my poor mum will probably have a heart attack!!
Hey Paul, my little ones are shedding really well, it's the big beasties that seem to be having problems Hope yours is better this time. Mine seem to go from blue to 3 days later a shed in the boxes _________________ www.draco2.co.uk
