|

Hello
I have been astounded by the size of food that royals can eat, both babies and adults.
One of my 10 weekish old babies is eating 35/40 grm rat weaners easily.
My thought is what do young royals eat in the wild and what by weight are they.
Out the egg after shed can they eat adult food or do they have to hunt for young???

I knew there was a reason for your albino growing so fast - you feed her humans _________________ A lil bit of Madagascar

I have heard of adults regurgitate pouch rats in the wild & those rats weigh over 2 kilos!
I have one royal that I fed a full size normal rat too, after she had eaten it it was hardly noticeable.
I think a lot of people feed their snakes with meals that are too small, especially babies. A few people I'd spoken were offering pinkie mice for baby royals when they should really be taking small weaners as a first feed. _________________

Yup . I think a lot of people see a snakes neck , look at the offered prey item and go , ' nah . no waaaay ' !
Its amazing the stretch on them necks . I have a female ( 450g ) that was given a gerbil , I was like ' Oh no ! her necks going to split ' ....once down there was hardly a bump. Snakes know what they can attempt and not what to attempt ...they ain't daft !
Think it was Toyah and I that were saying they same thing about most people under feeding royals due to this ( size wise ).
lol I wanna go and give me big girl a nice juicy big rat now !
( Edited ) I hear that in the wild , Gerbils are a staple to royals . _________________ 3.7.0 Royals

thanks everyone, sums up where I have got to. My 2k female has gone from 120/150grm rats to 300grm and not much difference.
My thinking was in the wild they have got to eat what they come across, and must be able to eat large food items from day one.
Would be interesting to find out what sizes etc they eat in the wild and compare them to mice, rat weaners.
thanks

good topic mike i like to feed my snake's on the upper side of the size of prey they can manage,i do think a slightly larger prey item excites them to feed as well.like scott says about his adult rat eater i have three female's that will eat a fully grown rat with out showing any real bulge afterwards _________________ www.jamieswordsreptiles.com |

Do you reckon WC/LTC fussy feeders would be more likely to take a larger prey item then? _________________ A lil bit of Madagascar

It's certainly worth a try.
I have found much better results offering larger prey than smaller prey. _________________
