My tuppence worth and sorry to disagree with you Lynne but spurs on pythons and tail width/length on corns are only an indication of sex, Mel (my g/f) has been 99% successful in sexing corns without probing. But the only way to be 100% sure is to probe, obviously this carries a risk to the snake if not done properly or by an experienced person. There is nothing worse than seeing a female snake bleeding all over the place cos someone has been a little too over enthusiastic with the probes.

On pythons the spurs are actually left over limbs from when they had legs and are not really any indication of sex although it has been found that males typically have longer ones than their female counterpart.

On other snakes it is a lot easier to tell the sex by just looking at them, for example a hognose female is a lot fatter than the male, with the male staying rather slender, obviously when they are hatchlings it is near impossible to tell them apart this way and only becomes evident as the snake matures.

If anyone needs to be 100% sure of sex then again this can only be achieved by the use of probes.

i did agree probing WAS the only way to be 100% certain. but even this is not 100%. with my corns i was 100%. and i can tell you the new ones i got from doncaster are not what they were meant to be. not really bothered about that though. i was bothered when one off my pythons turned out to be sexed wrong, and this was done by probing!
using tail shape plus scale count is a reliable way to sex. although to be certain i would probably use all three.

I have to admit I never read every reply to this post so I may have missed some of your statements lynne, sorry, oh and thanks for a great evening, hopefully the weekend will be fruitful (i.e. some bloody pythons will start to eat lol).

See you saturday.
