Hi Well basically i need an i.d for some baby stick insects i have.
My friend purchased a pair of stick insects form a reptile show last year.
Ok here are the facts.
The females lay eggs everyday.Which take a year too hatch.
If the eggs are fertilized by a male stick insect they only take 3 months too hatch.
My friend kept them but they died after a few months.
He gave me the eggs that they had laid.
Now one year on and i have a few stick insects babies.
The adults as far i san remember grow quite large and are quite prickly.
Basically i need to find out what they eat.
Thanks

Almost all sticks eat bramble or privet. _________________ People laugh at me because I am different

Hi there, Dave @ Insectsunlimited & I think what you have there are Extatasoma tiaratum which are commonly known as Mc Cleays spectre & come from Australia. As mentioned above, these will live quite happilly on bramble but tend to stay buff coloured. If you want to get better colour in them, their native host-plant is Eucalyptus & if given regularly, will produce spectacular reds thru to browns. Don`t keep other sticks with the Eucalyptus as it is toxic to other sticks. Regards... _________________ Dave Messer @ Insectsunlimited.

Hi There,
& I can fully understand why you are not going to try Eucalyptus, if you are not sure.
I am assuming that you have hatched these from eggs... & if so, when they first hatch, they are quick movers with a black body & a red head... with a white band between the black & red. This is because the eggs laid by the adult, are flicked onto the forest floor where they look like seeds. A breed of ant (not sure), with a red head & black body collects these "seeds" & takes them back to their nest where they incubate them unwittingly & keep them humid. When they hatch, they produce a pheremone that passifies the ants... & they are able to escape without being eaten. On their first "shed", they loose the black & red & take on the shape... & colour of miniature adults, getting darker with each shed. If this describes, pretty conclusively what you have, I would say they are McCleays... & it would be safe to give Eucalyptus. Can you put a picture up & I can give you a DEFINATE before trying Eucalyptus. Regards... Dave. _________________ Dave Messer @ Insectsunlimited.
