Looking for a 'smaller' species of rat snake?!
any suggestions welcome
on the lines of possibly trinket or ladder (I am aware that these snakes still have the potential to grow to 5+ ft but generally seem to be 3-4 ft)
does anyone out there keep ladder snakes?
how easy are they to come across in the hobby?
been thinking about trinkets for a while now just looking for confirmation from keepers as to their humidity requirements as I've read they can be a little troublesome come shed time if things aren't quite right?!
any thoughts appreciated
thanks

My Trinkies are absolute darlings... Not too big and really lovely snakes.
I don't have any trouble with shedding as long as they have a moss box - mine are kept on newspaper with a relatively small waterbowl (they seem to show no inclination to soak in a bigger one). I do occasionally get whole sheds, but more often it tears, always all comes off though. |

I keep a humid hide with mine aswell like Ally, if humidity is too low they do have problems shedding as you have already found out.
Diones are another small species.
Ladders, well ........talk to Devboy, he has a slight leaning towards this species to put it midly lol _________________ www.ratsnakefoundation.org |

I have a few hides kicking about that are designed for this purpose so i'll use damp moss with a small layer of peat on the bottom to help (peat not essential but i've got plenty ) otherwise a plastic tub with a hole cut out for access - much the same way as making a lay box but without the depth!?
cheers

One thing I'll say about Ladders is that they don't like it moist, they prefer to be dry and warm. They are usually naturally spirited, not a hands on snake. On only one occasion have I had a problem shed from a female, which was resolved by providing a damp pillow case that she got under to raise the humidity and achieve a clean slough over a few days.
Some Ladder pix seeing as you asked so nicely.
15yr old female.
... and a couple of Trinket pix as they are on special offer tonight.

Its about time I built up my Ladder collection again too. Thankfully being a fairly 'dull' snake, they don't attract the same kind of attention as some of the other species, so prices are usually fairly cheap for them. They do seem to fare better if left largely to themselves, IMO. _________________ www.ratsnakefoundation.org
