I have been thinking about switching to a bigger Exo Terra, getting a Male Crestie for my female, and setting up a natural viv with real plants.
So, this subject is of interest to me.
Is there a proven, fact based verdict on whether UV is required?.

Also, on the Exo Terra light units, I have seen either these or replica units in a store in Dartford (the name escapes me at present).
They are rather smart, basically, a silver metal box that covers just one half of the lid, so it can be sited forward or towards the back of the viv.
It has mounts for a heat bulb and a UV buld (not striplight), it's only downside is it does get rather hot to the touch from the heat of the bulbs, care would be needed with kids, or careless adults.
It is exactly what I would use if UV is required.

theyre replicas for sure, the exo terra ones are black with the exo terra gecko motif on te side, i did come across a shop that sold the exo terra ones, but i cant for the life of me remember where from.

As for scientific results on wether uv is needed for Cresteds, im not sure,there must be some somewhere,but i just use the common sense theory, its an animal, that when in the wild, lives in rather sheltered forests anyways, and sleeps under logs,branches etc to escape any light atall, then when they become active, the sun has gone and they come out to hunt, i have kept them with no problems without uv, and i have a couple of uv strips in the room for the plants, if your getting a planted viv, use the tubes, it will help your plants grow loads, just make sure to include some real dark hides if possible for the geckos,

Thanks Ben.
I was aware of no UV required for the Gecko, it was only if UV was really required for the plants in the Exo Terra.
It will be interesting to see the price difference between the Exo Terra light unit and the Replica's that I have seen.

yeh, oh sorry i didnt realise you meant the plants, well i can notice the difference from plants i have in the house of the same type bought at the same time, my reptile room ones are much larger and alreay sprouting new plants (spider plants) even the colours i think benefit.

im pretty sure plants do need uv light.

if you take a plant and place it near a window the plant will naturally grow towards the light.

there isnt any better proof than that in my opinion.

well yeh, plants need uv for photosynthesis to grow, the sun being the best obviously, but when in a reptile room or a bedroom, it isnt always easy to move everyhting near a window, and im pretty sure UV cant penetrate glass. so id say if you want to, id say tubes are the best.
