Progress report:

She shed perfectly
I tried my hand at a little bit of assist feeding her a 4 week old mouse last night - she didn't refuse it, she swallowed it herself and it's still inside her this morning.

No one is having a go at you in that sense, it is just concern for the snake and people can get emotional about it.

As your vet doesn't work weekends as you say it may be best to ask them too if they have the number of another herp vet you can use in an emergency over the weekends. I'm lucky mine has a weekend emergency service as there is more than one herp vet at the clinic so they take it in turns to work the weekends (as I understand it anyway). Though luckily for me never had a cause to use it yet.

sorry if some one has said this already but i couldn't be bothered to read through six pages of people saying nearly the same thing,

don't try to feed the snake a big meal straight away or even a meal the same girth as him, because there stomach acids which are highly;y concentrated have been inactive for a very long time, try force feeding a small mouse so its not so much work straight away, and do that once a week for 3 weeks, then try two small mice for 2 week's by this time they should start showing a response in there food

or you could do this with gerbils since you breed them

I agree with Scott W the snake is not going to cope with solid food at the moment.

This snake needs serious attention.

Firstly re-hydration is the priority with an electrolyte solution. ( Which I am sure you collected from you vet when you visited over the last four day).

Then start feeding with egg and a good vit. supplement added.

Both these should be administered by tube feeding. Personally I think this is far less stressful than force feeding solid items.

IF the animal starts to pick up then you can start trying to feed it with solid items or of course carry on tube feeding it with a suitable liquidized high quality carnivore food mixture. http://www.venomdoc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2552

Good luck.

Wil.

some sound advice.

I won't even feed my snakes a large prey item when i wake them up after just a few months winter cooling. first meals are always small, for example, 6ft bull snake will get, at the most, a small/medium mouse as her first meal after winter cooling. then gradually put them back up to appropriate prey items. reason? Scott W mentioned earlier about the stomach being a little too sensitive, you also need to consider the kidneys and liver?!
admittedly I'm a little over cautious perhaps but in your case you don't have the luxury of chance at this stage.

I hope you can turn this around, I really do. perhaps when the snake is big enough you could try DOC as 'indeep' seems to have a success story with chicks Smile

all the best

I recall watching something ages ago about Indian Rock Pythons, (may have been on a O' Shea program, the one where he has a cage made to see these mental Indian bears springs to mind) where he said that during times when prey is scarce the snakes stomach atrophies to quite an extent and upon feeding again regenerates.

(Though could be wrong about whole thing and getting it confused with something else)
